プロジェクト概要
The Peru Dry Forests REDD+ Project (the “Project”) seeks to protect the Tumbes and Piura forests, an arid tropical ecoregion along the Pacific coast of north-eastern Peru. This region is a biodiversity hot spot, containing many endemic species of plants and animals that have adapted to the permanent interaction between the cold Humboldt Currents and warm El Niño currents, which creates short wet seasons followed by long dry seasons. The Project, which protects over 200,000 hectares of land, is the first project to apply a methodology for avoiding degradation and deforestation in a dry forest. The Project area is comprised of three natural protected areas: the Tumbes National Reserve, Cerros de Amotape National Reserve, and El Angolo Game Reserve.
The project is being executed by Asociación para la Investigación y Desarrollo Integral (“AIDER”), an NGO founded in 1986 that works with local communities and stakeholders to promote sustainable development and environmental conservation across Peru. The objectives of the project are to conserve the forests, contribute to the mitigation of climate change, protect the high concentration of endemic species from extinction threats, conserve natural biodiversity, and generate benefits for the local population.
