The Cerro Patacón Landfill Gas Utilization Project captures and uses landfill gas (LFG) generated by the decomposition of the organic waste disposed at Cerro Patacón landfill site located in the municipality of Panama. The proposed project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the decomposition of municipal solid waste that would have been otherwise released to the atmosphere. Furthermore, the captured LFG will be combusted to generate electricity which will be fed into the national power electricity system. The electricity generated from the LFG will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as it will displace the emissions that in the absence of the project would have occurred from the common practice from fossil fuel-based electricity generation and the addition of new sources.
