プロジェクト概要
Corriechuillie 2 is located within the Cairngorms National Park on the North side of Baddoch Hill, near Grantown on Spey. The River Spey Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is also located near to the woodland site. The proposed woodland creation area takes in most of the land parcel except for a roadside strip of better quality grassland and the highest and most exposed part of the hill.
The objective of this project is to create a mosaic of native woodland and open ground covering a gross area of about 144.71 hectares. This will comprise 52.20 hectares gross of Native Upland Birch, 11.19 hectares of Caledonian Pine, 6.98 hectares of low-density broadleaves and 54.74 hectares of other land on the deep peat areas. The site will include 19.60 hectares of Livestock Exclusion/natural regeneration of juniper and birch. Corriechuillie 2 will support breeding birds. There will be hi-viz marking fitted to the deer fence within 1500 metres of the Black Grouse Lek, stock fencing will be used instead of deer fencing at the north-east end of the project, and work will be timed to avoid disturbance to the breeding birds as described elsewhere. Overall, there will be evident improvements to the woodland habitat. The woodland will create excellent habitat for woodland grouse. Both Capercaillie and Blackgrouse are found within the vicinity and potentially will benefit from the scheme.
The project developer, Forest Carbon, focuses on woodland creation and peatland restoration projects for carbon capture and ecosystem services in the United Kingdom. Working with businesses and land managers since 2006, they've helped fund and develop the planting of over 13 million trees and the restoration of 2,000 hectares of degraded peatlands. These projects will remove 3.3 million tonnes of CO₂e from the atmosphere while providing a host of important benefits to society including flood mitigation, enhanced biodiversity, and increased public access.
