Bayfield County Forest
Improved Forest Management
Forestry
プロジェクト概要
The project encompasses 159,656 acres representing Bayfield County's Forest holdings as the third largest expanse of county forest in Wisconsin. The county has practiced commercial harvesting across its ownership since the establishment of the county forest system in 1927, and revenues from timbering have represented the largest single source of income for the county.
However, because Bayfield County now stands to recognize a significant new source of revenue from the establishment of a carbon project, county managers are reducing harvests meaningfully below annual harvest allocation limits and actively considering further curtailment of harvesting to prioritize greater carbon sequestration. The Bayfield carbon project is the first forest carbon project initiated on county lands in the country, and the bold and progressive action of Bayfield's forest management team has already inspired other counties to enroll in similar projects.
